What is TRINITY project about?

The adoption of a single and unified electricity market is one of the main challenges faced by Europe today. Northern and Western Europe have already made some progress during recent years towards the achievement of this objective. However, South-Eastern Europe (SEE) is still to tackle substantial barriers in order to catch up with the more experienced EU regions.

This challenge will be addressed thanks to TRINITY project, funded by the Horizon 2020 Programme. TRINITY's team, composed of 19 partners from 11 countries, will improve this current situation and facilitate the interconnection of South-Eastern electricity markets – among themselves and within the current Multi-Regional Coupling area (MRC).
The main objectives of the project are:
  • Enhanced cross border trading and balancing energy exchange.
  • To ensure electricity market integration.
  • Increased share of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in SEE (South-Eastern Europe).
  • Improved security of system operation in the context of increased RES.
  • Better coordination, interaction, and communication.
Until 2023, TRINITY will develop a set of solutions to enhance cooperation and coordination among the Transmission System Operators of South-Eastern Europe (SEE) in order to support the integration of the electricity markets in the region, whilst promoting higher penetration of clean energies. TRINITY technologies will be demonstrated in 8 different SEE Countries: Serbia, Greece, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Hungary.

Project progress

So far, the project has analysed the regulatory conditions and the infrastructure of its pilot sites. TRINITY has also defined the use cases to be tested in the demonstration phase. These activities, together with the definition of the whole TRINITY architecture that has just finished, is allowing the product developers to design their products in the second stage of the project.

How has COVID-19 affected TRINITY?

Fortunately, the COVID-19 outbreak has not supposed a relevant impact for TRINITY project. As the project is in its initial stage, no field work was required, and all the work could be solved via teleworking.
The main impact was the cancellation of the Plenary Meeting expected in May.
The consortium replaced it by increasing the number of teleconferences for keeping the communications between partners.

Coffee Break

The COVID-19 crisis has changed many aspects of our daily life, such as coffee breaks at work. In the case of TRINITY, those coffee breaks happened just during the consortium meetings, even though we keep such a good habit. Teleconferences become the best way to keep this habit. Besides, we have decided to share them so the audience can stay tuned.
Everyone can watch the “TRINITY Coffee Breaks” videos on our YouTube channel! Currently, there are three chapters where partners talk about how the COVID-19 crisis affects different aspects of the Energy System such as renewable energies, cross-border coordination, and market integration.
Don't miss them!

Next steps

Partners of TRINITY will start to work very soon on the design and development of the four TRINITY PRODUCTS and on the analysis of the current state of Intraday and reserve markets at national, regional and European level.
